The McJimsey Seminar is presented annually in memory of Robert Duncan McJimsey (1936-2009), Professor of History at Colorado College from 1968 to 2007 and beloved warden and vestry member at Grace and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Bob was imaginative and creative. He enjoyed making up games and stories. He especially put his creativity into his teaching, always eager to find new ways to inspire his students' intellectual curiosity. Bob believed in the liberal arts mission of teaching life's lessons and possibilities.
In addition to teaching British and European history, Bob enjoyed teaching interdisciplinary courses with colleagues in the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. The seminar, a joint presentation of the church and the college, explores an equally wide range of topics in history, religion, music and science.
It is the spark of intellectual curiosity tempered with humor that we honor each year as we remember our friend and teacher, Bob McJimsey.
This year’s Robert D. McJimsey Memorial Seminar, in the immediate aftermath of a tumultuous election season, will offer an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on the role that of Christian communities play in shaping the American experience through longstanding advocacy of social justice.
Heath Carter, eminent historian of church history at Princeton Theological Seminary, will open the series with a lecture in the nave at Grace and St. Stephen's entitled “Blest be the Tie that Binds? Faithful Witness on the Other Side of Election Day.” Informal discussion will follow in the parish hall over civilized refreshments.
This lecture will be followed by a second presentation on Friday, November 8: Social Christians and the Fight to End American Inequality at 12:30 pm in the Timothy Fuller Event Space, Tutt LIbrary, Colorado College. Attendees are welcome at either or both events and no tickets are required.
