How do I become a member of the Episcopal Church? Full membership in the Church is conferred in the rite of Holy Baptism.
What is Confirmation? Baptized individuals are encouraged, after a period of instruction, to seek Confirmation. “Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.” Book of Common Prayer.
What if I have been baptized and confirmed in another faith community? Those who have been baptized and confirmed in other denominations can be “received” into the Episcopal Church through the laying on of hands by the bishop.
What if I have been received or confirmed in the Episcopal Church but would like to reaffirm my baptismal covenant? Those who already have been “received” or “confirmed” in the Episcopal Church may “reaffirm” their baptismal covenant in the rite of Confirmation.
When does Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation occur?
Preparation for adult Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation is offered in the Road to Emmaus, which starts in the fall. This class is not required but it is recommended. Services of Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation occur during the bishop’s annual visit to the region, which takes place once a year.
